Upper Vipava Valley is the region of Zelèn, an autochthonous wine variety which only grows in this part of Slovenia. Here, among vineyards and quaint local villages, on foot or bike, you will learn about the culture of wine production, explore the typical cuisine of the area and discover numerous stories of the valley.
Weekend Zelèn includes two cycling tours of varying difficulties. Active, for those who like to challenge themselves by taking on steep hill climbs and enjoying the stunning views on the top and Leisure package, which is suited for those who prefer flat routes with more stops on the way. Some paths can only truly be enjoyed on foot, so we’ve included a hike along the Vertovec Trail, which offers a unique experience of Vipava valley’s wine tradition.
After you settle at your chosen accommodation you will head to Miška farm in the village of Erzelj. In order to get acquainted with the Vipava Valley and get the feel of the place, your host will prepare a special culinary evening with local dishes and wines and tell you more about the life in this beautiful valley. You will be able to taste the best local wine varieties with Pinela and Zelén being the stars among the autochthonous varieties. But don’t get carried away drinking too much! You should know that there’s an interesting cycling trip through the Vipava Valley waiting for you the next day!
Following an abundant breakfast, we head on a cycling trip through the wine region of Zelèn. The trip starts with a short tour of Vipava, which has been dubbed »Slovene Venice« due to its numerous bridges over the Vipava river. This old town fascinates with its old history dating back to Celts, Romans and later centuries when many noble families chose Vipava as their place of residence. After the tour, we cycle towards the village of Podnanos and Pasji rep, the most famous wine region of the Zelèn wine variety. Here starts the ascent to Vrabče and Štjak followed by a ride on the Karst’s edge with stunning views of Vipava Valley and The Alps on one side and Slovenian Istra and the Adriatic Sea on the other. You’ll descent back down in the direction of Vipava Valley to Goče, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages in the whole region. A real treat awaits you here! A delicious lunch at Cejkotova farm and a tour of the village. The last stop on this trip will be Planina, where you will be able to indulge in this region’s wine and other culinary delights, meticulously prepared by local winemakers. We descent back to the valley, while in the evening hours, another treat awaits us at the Arkade Cigoj farm. Here the landowner will prepare you a delicious dinner following his mother’s old recipes.
The »Leisure« tour is similar to »Active« tour, but it has been customized for those who don’t like steep climbs and prefer to ride flat routes, relaxing and enjoying in the view of unspoilt nature. You will skip the difficult ascent to Vrabče and Štjak and take more stops at interesting points on the way to the beautiful village of Goče. Here a delicious lunch awaits you at the Cejkotova farm. In the last leg of the tour, you’ll skip the ascent to Planina and ride to Vrhpolje where you’ll be able to indulge in autochthonous wine and local specialties prepared by the villagers in their wine cellars. The day ends in the evening hours with a dinner at Arkade Cigoj tourist farm, where the landowner will prepare delicious dishes using the old recipes passed down to him from his mother.
After a leisurely breakfast, we begin a fantastic day with a hike on the Vertovec Trail. Matija Vertovec was a priest and the first author to write about viticulture, wine production and winemaking chores in the Slovene language. He was the first tutor and mentor to local winemakers and had an important influence on the region’s early wine production. The trail passes through local villages and vineyards to Vertovec’s birthplace Jakulini pri Šmarjah. A traditional lunch following the old customs awaits you in the midst of luscious vineyards.
